It is ALIVE! The soldier fly larva may look dead but it eats, breathes, grows and moves (although rarely). Talk about the ultimate couch potato. You don't have to move much when you eat tiny plants floating right past your mouth. The tuft of bristles on its back end is where it breathes. What do you think would happen if oil was spilled on the pond? Would it cover the soldier fly's breathing disc?
